Following his surprise omission from Leeds United’s starting line-up against Brighton and Hove Albion, many believed Pontus Jansson would be keeping a low-profile ahead of Saturday’s clash with Reading, but the Swedish international has appeared in the media, criticising the Portugal national team.

Speaking to Swedish media outlet, Fotbollskanalen, Jansson criticised Portugal, following Sweden’s 3-2 victory over the European Champions.

The Leeds defender has spent the past week with the Swedish national team, featuring for 90-minutes in Saturday’s 4-0 victory over Belarus, before making a second-half appearance against Portugal last night.

Jansson came on as a half-time substitute, as Sweden trailed Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal 2-0, and played a part in a stunning comeback, as they scored three second-half goals to clinch victory in the friendly.

Portugal won the European Championship title in 2016, but Jansson has voiced his doubts over their title as the ‘best in Europe’, he told Fotbollskanalen: “It is clear that they are a good team but according to me is not the best in Europe.”

The 26-year old will hope his recent performances for Sweden have caught the attention of Leeds’ head-coach Garry Monk, after he opted to leave Jansson out of the 2-0 victory over Brighton.

Leeds are currently fourth in the Sky Bet Championship and travel to Reading on Saturday evening, for another clash against a promotion rival, where Jansson is expected to challenge Liam Cooper for a place in Monk’s starting 11.
