Blackburn Rovers are interested in signing Brighton centre back Jan Paul van Hecke in the January transfer window, a report from Sussex World has claimed.

Van Hecke of course, spent last season on loan at Ewood Park with Rovers, and it now appears as though they may be keen to have him back once again.

As a result, this is certainly a link that could generate plenty of interest, given those previous connections between the Dutchman and the Championship club.

So with that in mind, we've taken a look at some of the big questions that might arise from these latest links between Blackburn and van Hecke, right here.

What do we know so?

Van Hecke enjoyed an excellent spell on loan at Blackburn last season, making 32 appearances in all competitions, and going on to win the club's Player of the Year award.

As a result, a return to Ewood Park for the Dutchman would undoubtedly be a popular one among the Rovers faithful.

However, it seems the club may be prioritising other centre back targets right now, with head coach Jon Dahl Tomasson confirming last week, that an offer has been made to sign Hibernian's Ryan Porteous.

Meanwhile, Rovers are not the only club who are seemingly keen to bring the 22-year-old back to the Championship in what remains of the January window.

Both Sunderland - who are now coached by van Hecke's manager from his time at Blackburn, Tony Mowbray - and Middlesbrough, have also been credited with an interest in the centre back.

Is it likely to happen?

While a centre back does not feel like a top priority for Rovers this month, there may still be a possibility that this deal happens.

It has been suggested that it is Watford who are leading the race for Porteous, with the prospect of the 23-year-old seeing out the season at Hibernian also said to be a possibility.

That may mean that Blackburn are forced to turn to another option such as van Hecke, if they want to add to their defensive options this month.

Indeed, Brighton have also been linked with Shakhtar centre-back Mykola Matviyenko this month, and his arrival could push van Hecke down the pecking order, and closer to an exit if it happens.

However, speaking after making his first Premier League start in Brighton's 2-2 draw with Leicester on Saturday, van Hecke suggested he is keen to get more game time with the Seagulls, meaning it may take a lot of negotiating, for this move to happen.
