Wigan Athletic's survival chances were handed a big boost following a dramatic late win over Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday evening.

The Latics recorded their first home win since October after coming from behind to defeat Garry Monk's Owls 2-1, thanks to a last minute header from Jamal Lowe.

Tuesday's win lifts the Latics to within four points of 21st placed Charlton Athletic as Paul Cook's men continue to look to move out of the bottom three.

Jamal Lowe, a summer signing from Portsmouth, scored his second goal of the season as Wigan claimed their second win of 2020.

The 25-year-old's only previous goal had come in Wigan's last home win against Nottingham Forest in October, and fans will hope that this goal can give the striker the confidence to kick on.

Speaking to the club's official media channels after the game, Lowe acknowledged that recent results have been frustrating for him and that the team have got used to letting leads slipped.

"It's nice to come from behind to get the win. We're too used to leading games and then conceding late on, it's been frustrating for me not to score more goals for the team," Lowe said speaking after the game.

Setting down a challenge to himself and the rest of the side, Lowe said: "It's essential that we put a run together now. Performances have been getting better and better, possession-wise we're dominating games, but we haven't been killing them off and hopefully now is our time to do that."

Wigan face a tricky trip to Leeds United on Saturday before back-to-back home games against Preston and Middlesbrough, and Lowe will hope his teammates rise to the challenge of putting a run together.

The Verdict

Wigan needed that win last night to finally put an end to this long run without a win on home soil.

They were well worth it too, with the side fully dominating Wednesday in the second period and not being content on settling for a draw.

Fans will be pleased to hear that Lowe has fully acknowledged he hasn't reached his goalscoring potential this term, and that he is keen for the side to put together a good run of form.

The Latics travel to Elland Road on Saturday, a ground where they won one of only two league games away from home last term.

Should history repeat itself on Saturday, the Latics will take confidence into their following home games.
