Millwall striker Tom Elliott has had a frustrating time at The Den since his move to the to the club in the summer of 2017.

And he has been compared to a Premier League giant after his recent upturn in form.

The former AFC Wimbledon striker had been snapped up by the London club on a free transfer having been earmarked as a potential long-term replacement for veteran forward, and club captain Steve Morison.

The 27-year-old managed six goals in 28 appearances last term and has scored a third of that this term, but has featured more than he did at this stage of the campaign last year.

With Morison in the twilight of his career, Elliott looks to have settled and understood what Neil Harris wants from him having put in two excellent displays in the Lions last two matches.

Having stared in the 2-2 draw away to Nottingham Forest, he followed that up with a solid display in the win over Aston Villa before the international break, scoring the winner on that occasion.

The striker has set standards now, and the Millwall supporters will be anticipating another effective performance this weekend against Reading.

Such has been his form, Lions defender Jake Cooper has compared the striker to Manchester United forward Romelu Lukaku.

Cooper said: “I think big T has got everything.

“You can see his attributes, he’s a big strong fella and can be so difficult to play against.

“I’ve even said to him he’s got everything that Lukaku’s got.

“He’s just got to score the goals and get the rewards he deserves. He’s a great guy and a great player to have in our team.”

The Verdict

Comparing Tom Elliott to Romelu Lukaku is a little bit of a stretch, but you can understand the intentions to the analogy Jake Cooper adopted.

He is a big, powerful forward who, on his day, should be a handful for any defender in the division.

Some players take time to adjust to a new club and their style of play.

It might take an individual two or three games, but others longer.

And it looks like Elliott is finally settling into life at The Den and start to show why Neil Harris added him to the squad in 2017 with his performances and hopefully his increased rate of goals.

If he carries on his form, then there is no reason why he can’t keep Morison out of the team long-term and eventually become his successor.
