West Bromwich Albion suffered a cruel defeat in their play-off semi-final against Aston Villa, as Dean Smith's side pipped them on penalties to a place at Wembley.

Craig Dawson gave Albion a 1-0 win on the night to cancel out Villa's one-goal advantage after the first leg, but they were forced to play the game out for a draw when Chris Brunt was dismissed just before extra time.

Albion managed to keep Villa at bay, but failed to keep their nerve in the shoot-out with Mason Holgate and Ahmed Hegazi both seeing their penalties saved by Villa goalkeeper Jed Steer.

The Baggies were aiming to reach Wembley without the services of their top goalscorer as Dwight Gayle was serving a suspension following his red card in the first leg.

This meant loanee Jacob Murphy was handed a starting place in James Shan's side, and he has now issued his response to West Brom's disappointing season finale:

The 24-year-old described the match as a 'cruel' way to end Albion's promotion push, while he also suggested he will not be returning to the Hawthorns once his loan expires this summer.

Murphy, who is on loan from Newcastle United, has made 13 appearances for the Baggies since joining in January but he never managed to firmly establish himself in the starting line-up during that time.

The Verdict

Murphy would have been hoping he could take this opportunity to impress in Gayle's absence, but he failed to really deliver on the night and was substituted after 82 minutes.

The winger's future now seems uncertain, with it appearing that he is surplus to requirements at his parent club. He may be forced to seal another loan switch to Championship next season in order to find regular game time.
