Barnsley forward Jacob Brown insists he isn’t ‘happy’ despite getting his account up and running for the Tykes at the weekend.

Brown scored a consolation goal for Barnsley as they fell to another defeat when they faced Huddersfield Town at the John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday. Barnsley lost 2-1 in their third game without a permanent manager, following the departure of Daniel Stendel.

Prior to this result, Barnsley had impressively drawn two games against Swansea and then West Brom, with many thinking they may have turned a corner and could mount a survival push.

In their most recent fixture, Brown scored his first goal of the season, but the moment was bittersweet for the forward with his side being defeated. It was a disappointing game for the Tykes who will have been frustrated at the cheap way they conceded the opening goal, despite being arguably the better side prior to this.

Brown commented to the club’s official site about the moment of scoring his first Championship goal, alongside another defeat, he said: “It was obviously a great feeling to get my first goal in the Championship. It’s taken a while to get my first of the season and it’s a shame that we didn’t push on to then get back in the game.

“At the end of the day, we’ve failed to win or even get a draw so I can’t be happy even though I did get off the mark.”

Barnsley were full of confidence going into this Yorkshire derby, having picked up two draws against promotion-chasing Swansea and West Brom. Speaking about the performance, Brown added this: “It wasn’t good enough.

“We started off alright first 20 minutes or so but then seemed to go into our shells and allowed them onto us.

“They’ve scored with their first real attack and the defending wasn’t good enough. It wasn’t good for either of their goals in fairness.

“Then we don’t take our chances at the other end and that sums up it up really. It wasn’t a good performance.”

“We went into the game with a lot of confidence after the two previous performances so it wasn’t like we had an excuse really.

“It’s about picking ourselves up now, getting straight back at it on the training ground and preparing well for another big game on Friday night against Bristol City.”

The Verdict

Brown’s comments are very grounded and reasonable about what the bigger picture is at Barnsley. While he is happy to get his first goal, that shouldn’t (and isn’t) be what he takes away from the game, as it’s another result that has gone against them when they could have easily capitalised on positive moments in the game.

Barnsley and Brown will be looking to put this disappointment behind them when they face Bristol City on Friday night, with the winger looking to add to his tally.
