Portsmouth were beaten in the League One play-off semi-final, 1-0 on aggregate after sharing a 0-0 draw at Fratton Park.

In a toothless game between two sides far from their best, it was Pompey who lost out. They needed to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg and never looked convincing enough to trouble their rivals from the north east.

Neither side played particularly well on a night which proved the adage 'familiarity breeds contempt'. Niggly tackles, an unsavoury incident with fans and a missed red card for James Vaughan all contributed to a tough evening for the home side.

Sunderland won't mind, they're going to Wembley to face Doncaster or Charlton, whilst Portsmouth are resigned to another season in League One.

It's the second year Kenny Jackett has failed to get them promoted and he's bearing some of their anger on social media, with some calls for him to go and take his negative football with him.
