New Portsmouth manager Kenny Jackett has revealed the identify of his captain and vice captain for the forthcoming season, report the Portsmouth News

Former Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Jackett has appointed summer signing Brett Pitman as captain, following the departure of veteran promotion-winning captain Michael Doyle, who has rejoined former club Coventry City, following their relegation into the fourth tier.

Jackett has also introduced a vice-captain at Fratton Park, something he thinks was not an official role during their title-winning campaign last season, in the shape of winger Gareth Evans.

Pitman made his debut in Saturday's 2-0 win over Bognor, wearing the captain's armband and opening his Pompey account with a goal in either half to clinch the victory.

It has emerged that Pitman leading the side will be a permanent measure, and Jackett paid tribute to the former Bournemouth hitman's natural leadership skills.

The former Millwall boss has affirmed his belief that Pitman will grow into the role, which he has granted to the 29-year-old because he wanted to award him more responsibility this season, as Pompey gear up for a return to League 1.

Pompey fans will be hoping that Pitman can lead by example on the pitch, and his experiences at a higher level should make him a well respected figure in the Portsmouth dressing room.

Lots will ride on how Pitman adjusts to his new role, with many Pompey fans hoping he can add the firepower needed to fire his new employers to a successful season upon their return to the third tier.
