Jack Wilshere has revealed that he did hold talks with Derby County boss Wayne Rooney in the summer, but opted against a move to Pride Park.

Derby were restricted to signing free agents after being placed under a transfer embargo during the summer, signing the likes of Sam Baldock, Richard Stearman, Phil Jagielka and Ravel Morrison.

The Rams were also linked with Jack Wilshere, who remains a free agent having been released by Bournemouth at the end of his contract.

Wilshere made 17 appearances for Bournemouth in all competitions last season, featuring 14 times in the Championship.

The midfielder was said to be training with Derby, but he later went to train in Italy with Como as he continued to mull over his options.

Wilshere is still on the lookout for a new club, though, and spoke live on talkSPORT this morning discussing his situation.

The former England and Arsenal midfielder opened up on the links with Derby, too, saying: "I did speak to Wazza in the summer, it was when Derby were under that embargo where they couldn't buy anyone.

"I went to Como instead. I thought about it, but it weren't for me. I don't know, it depends what comes up in January.

"I played in the Championship last year, I did actually enjoy it. It's a tough league, I don't think it suited my style of play."

The Verdict

Beggars can't be choosers, so they say, and I think Wilshere needs to be as open-minded as possible given his current situation.

He is in desperate need of getting his career back on track, and it is sad as injuries have really hampered his career.

He's 29 and can still turn it around if he keeps his head down and works hard.
