Sunderland manager Jack Ross has revealed that defensive duo Reece James and Tom Flanagan are back in contention to feature against Walsall this weekend.
The pair missed the goalless draw at Barnsley in the week that left the Black Cats four points behind the Yorkshire side but with a game in hand in the promotion race.
It remains to be seen whether they will be recalled, but Ross confirmed the positive news, as well as providing an update on George Honeyman, when speaking via the club’s media this afternoon.
“We had a number unavailable on Tuesday. Tom Flanagan and Reece James are back fit and training. So is George but he’s unavailable through suspension.”
Honeyman has recovered from concussion but the captain will have to miss the next two league games after he picked up a red card against Wycombe prior to the fixture at Oakwell.
Sunderland will fully expect to continue their fine run at the Stadium of Light this weekend against the struggling Saddlers, with Ross’ men yet to lose a league game on their own patch.
The strength of the Sunderland squad was highlighted in the week when they kept a clean sheets against a good Barnsley side without the two defenders.
Therefore, it’s not a given that James and Flanagan will come back in this weekend.
But, it’s a good problem for Ross to have and the players know they can’t let their standards drop in the run-in.
