Sunderland manager Jack Ross now has his sights firmly set on becoming the number one side in League One after breaking into the top two.

A 2-0 win against Plymouth Argyle two weeks ago meant the Black Cats broke into the automatic promotion places for the first time since the start of September, as Peterborough United slipped up against Wycombe Wanderers.

Top spot is now the sole priority for Ross.

"To get to the top of the league would be another step forward for us," he told the club's media.

"We have no divine right to be there but we haven’t been there this season. It is where we want to get to and stay.

"It would be a great psychological reward for them."

Sunderland are currently in the middle of an impressive eight-game winning run in all competitions and look set to put in a very serious promotion bid.

Back-to-back relegations from the Premier League and then the Championships left them in the third tier, rounding off one of the worst spells in the club's history.

But, with the arrival of owner Stewart Donald, as well as Ross, in the summer it has helped to turn the club around and they seem to be heading in the right direction again.

The Verdict

This is a very level-headed and accurate point from Ross.

Getting to the top of the table would really put the icing on the cake after an incredible run of form.

It will take a lot to stop them from bouncing straight back to the second tier now.
