Sunderland boss Jack Ross has revealed that there are several players who are a doubt for tomorrow's game against Accrington Stanley.

The Black Cats are currently six points behind second-placed Barnsley in the race for automatic promotion but they have three games in hand - starting against John Coleman's side.

However, Ross told the club's media they are heading into the game with doubts over a few players, with Adam Matthews also out: "Matthews remains out of tomorrow night’s trip to Accrington. We have doubts over a few more but we’ll give ourselves another 24 hours to consider them."

But, it wasn't all bad news for the Black Cats, with Will Grigg set to feature as they look to manage his injury and Kazaiah Sterling also available.

"Grigg is hardly training at the minute which isn’t ideal," he continued. "We’ve got to try and get him through games and hopefully that strengthens his ability to play a bit more. Having Sterling back available tomorrow night is a big plus."

The Black Cats go into the game on the back of a penalty shootout defeat to Portsmouth in the Checkatrade Trophy final at Wembley on Sunday.

The Verdict

This is a mixed update for Sunderland but the fortunate thing is that Ross has a very big squad to work with.

So, whilst there are a few standout individuals, on the whole they have strength in depth which means very few players are irreplaceable.

The Grigg news would be the most concerning but thankfully for the Wearside outfit it looks as though he will be able to play.
