Sunderland boss Jack Ross has provided an important injury update ahead of his side's game against Sheffield United in the EFL Cup on Wednesday.

Ross has revealed that Aiden McGeady and Jordan Willis are set to miss the game, with the Sunderland manager claiming that Joel Lynch and Laurens De Bock could be in line to replace them in the starting XI.

McGeady has been a key player for the Black Cats in recent seasons, and rescued a point for them at the weekend, as they were forced to settle for a point against Bolton Wanderers.

De Bock is yet to feature for Sunderland since he moved to the Stadium of Light on loan from Leeds United in the summer transfer window.

He'll be keen to take the opportunity presented to him, as he looks to secure a regular starting spot in Jack Ross' side this season as they aim to return to the Championship.

Ross also stated that Alim Ozturk isn't going to feature against the Blades at Bramall Lane, as he is still suffering from a knock, whilst some of the under 23's team could feature against Chris Wilder's men.

The Verdict:

It's going to be a tough test for Sunderland, that's for sure.

There main creative outlet in Aiden McGeady is out of this one, and a number of their younger players could be involved, so it's going to be far from a simple task to progress to the next round of the EFL Cup.

It'll only be a distraction to their promotion bid this season, so I don't think Jack Ross will be too concerned if they exit the competition at this stage.
