Jack Ross was delighted with his Sunderland side as they powered to a 3-0 win against Southend to open up a four point gap between them and the chasing pack.

The Black Cats were ruthless is despatching Chris Powell's side, with goals from George Honeyman, Chris Maguire and Aidan McGeady.

They've lost just once in 15 matches in all competitions, winning five on the bounce and keeping three consecutive clean sheets in the league. whilst the misery of last season is still fresh in the memories of fans, there's been a remarkable turnaround since Ross arrived.

Despite the three different goal scorers, he hailed another of his players, 22-year old Lynden Gooch. The USA international has three goals to his name this season from midfield and claimed an assist at the weekend.

“It is such an important part of playing in that position - goals and assists - and Lynden’s numbers are incredible so far this season, a third of the way through," he told the Shields Gazette.

“If he replicates that for the rest of the season his numbers will be incredible and he will have made a brilliant contribution."

Ross' side face Plymouth away in seven days time, before two cup matches against League Two opposition, Morecambe and Port Vale.

The Verdict

Gooch has been incredible for Ross this season, he plays behind the striker and offers width as well as the ability to cut inside and switch feet.

He's being afforded time in a division that helps his development and if he keeps learning and evolving he'll be a big part of their future at a higher level.
