Sunderland manager Jack Ross has revealed that he is more confident ahead of Sunday's League One Play-Off final clash with Charlton than he was for their previous Wembley trip.

The Black Cats were beaten by Portsmouth in the Checkatrade Trophy final earlier in the campaign but Ross insists that they know what to expect this time around.

"It’s felt different this week in a good way," the club's official Twitter account reported from Ross' pre-match press conference.

"In the Checkatrade Trophy Final we didn’t really know what we were going into, but this week has been normal.

"The players know what is at stake. We’ve known since the start of the season."

Sunderland edged past Portsmouth over two tightly-contested semi-final legs, with Chris Maguire's stunning volley giving them a first-leg advantage.

The return leg at Fratton Park was not one that will live long in the memory with the scrappy match ending goalless, meaning it was Sunderland who advanced to Wembley.

In the other clash it was Charlton who overcame Doncaster Rovers on penalties following a thrilling second leg at the Valley.

The verdict

Whilst Sunderland should be more confident they should be careful that does not turn into cockiness.

Charlton will prove very tough opposition and go into the match as the form team - arguably even better than Portsmouth were prior to the Checkatrade final.

But the Black Cats showed good form in the semi-finals and should rightly have confidence.
