Sunderland boss Jack Ross has insisted that Nathan Jones’ departure at Luton Town has changed nothing ahead of Saturday’s clash between the two promotion hopefuls in League One.

Luton’s plans for the clash at the Stadium of Light were thrown into chaos yesterday, when the Hatters confirmed that Jones had departed the promotion-chasing club in favour of Stoke City and a shot at the Championship.

It’s since been reported that Mick Harford will take charge against Sunderland this weekend, with Ross playing down the significant change at Luton.

“Nathan Jones leaving doesn’t change a huge amount,” he told Sunderland’s official media.

“The reality is Luton have had a style of play that’s brought them success. I don’t envisage any changes to that.

“It is another exciting game for us to look forward to."

Under Jones, Luton were on a 13-match unbeaten run in the league, which had catapulted them ahead of Sunderland in the promotion race. However, they’ve drawn their last two League One matches heading into Saturday.

Sunderland are now four unbeaten as they look to rebuild following defeat to Portsmouth, with Ross’ side collecting eight points from a possible 12.

Both sides are looking to close the gap on Portsmouth this weekend.

The Verdict

Ross and his side do need to keep their complete focus this weekend.

He’s right, Jones leaving doesn’t change much, Luton are still a very good side and, if anything, the manager’s departure will only motivate the Hatters more.

Sunderland will have to be at the top of their game to beat Luton on Saturday.
