Sunderland manager Jack Ross has insisted that his side must move on, after their unbeaten start to the season came to an end against Peterborough United at the weekend.

The Black Cats had won their previous five matches in all competitions, but their unbeaten start to the campaign came to an end at London Road, as Peterborough ran out comfortable 3-0 winners.

However, Ross is adamant that his side did not underestimate their opponents or approach the game with any complacency after their unbeaten start to the season.

Ross has insisted that although Peterborough deserved the victory, there were still some positives from him to take away from the performance and it is important that the team move on.

“It’s not a reality check for us because there’s no way in the world we were carried away or approached this game with any complacency,” Ross told the Sunderland club website.

“If the performance was poor from minute one, I’d have accepted that as a potential criticism, but we were at it on Saturday.

“We felt good coming into the game, the performance in the early part of the game was good. Sometimes you have days where it hinges on key moments and that’s what happened.

“Peterborough deserved to win the game, they’ve recorded a good result, and we move on.”

Ross is hoping to guide Sunderland to promotion to the Championship this season, after his side lost in the League One play-off final last term.

Sunderland are now sixth in League One, after taking eleven points from their opening six matches.

The Black Cats now face a two-week period without a game, after their match against Burton Albion at the weekend was postponed due to international call-ups.

The Verdict

I think Ross is right. Even though Sunderland are one of the favourites for promotion this season, League One is still a very competitive league and they are going to lose games.

There's no doubt that the Sunderland players will be disappointed with the result from the weekend, but at the end of the day, they've lost one game and there's no point in anybody getting carried away.

We're still early into the season and Sunderland's start to the new campaign has been very encouraging.

It's important that the players move on from this result and bounce back in their next game against Accrington Stanley.
