Sunderland are seemingly edging closer to completing a deal to sign Will Grigg from Wigan on a permanent transfer Jack Ross has confirmed via journalist, James Hunter.

The Sunderland writer for The Chronicle provided supporters with an update on Friday morning after a frantic end to the January transfer window last night.

It was also revealed by Sky Sports reporter, Keith Downie on Wednesday evening that a fee of around £3m was accepted by Wigan with just minutes remaining before the 11pm deadline.

Hunter's latest update will be pleasing news and Jack Ross will be hoping that the deal can be finalised sooner rather than late to put to bed any speculation that the deal hasn't gone through.

It will come as no surprise to see Sunderland in the market for a striker in the first place, with Josh Maja leaving a notable void up-front after he left the club to join Bordeaux earlier this month.

But Sunderland supporters will certainly feel as though Grigg is the perfect man to replace Maja, and could prove to be the missing piece in the jigsaw for their promotion bid this season.

Grigg has only made ten league starts for Wigan this season in the Championship, and is likely to have his long-term future resolved in the near future.

The Verdict:

What a signing this is.

Grigg has been Sunderland's long-term target this month and they have seemingly got their man, right at the death.

I'm confident in saying that he will provide the goals needed to fire Sunderland back into the Championship at the first time of asking.
