Sunderland are facing a anxious wait to find out the extent of striker Charlie Wyke's injury after he was stretchered off against Burton Albion at the weekend.

The former Bradford City man was making his first League One start for the Black Cats, but lasted just 43 minutes before a collision with Burton keeper Dimitar Evtimov led to him being carried off and replaced by Chris Maguire.

The 25-year old suffered an injury to the same knee that has ruled him out of the opening month or so of the season. The striker was visibly upset as he left the field of play having suffered such a huge setback.

“There was a significant impact when he challenged with their goalkeeper," manager Jack Ross told the Sunderland Echo. “It is the same knee that he came to the club with, he is in a bit of pain right now. Sometimes these things can settle quite quickly and they are not as bad as you believe but it can go the other way."

The full extent of the injury has not yet been revealed, but the manager added they'll be keeping a close eye on the striker, thought to have cost £1m in the summer.

“We’ll be assessing it over the next 24-hours."

The Verdict

What a huge blow, for the player and for the club. Wyke was a big money buy and a player they hoped would fire them to the top of the table.

This will be a serious worry for the player, a relapse so soon after recovering last time could have serious repercussions. Sunderland will be sweating too, a lot of their hopes ride on his shoulders.
