Sunderland boss Jack Ross has expressed his desire to add another striker to his squad before the loan window closes.

Recent arrivals Charlie Wyke and Jerome Sinclair are both sidelined through injury with Josh Maja the only fit striker in the Black Cats' first team at present.

And the Northern Echo is reporting that Ross wants another attacking option, but conceded any addition would not be in before Thursday’s Carabao Cup tie with Sheffield Wednesday.

Manchester United striker James Wilson was a loan target for the League One side, but Sunderland lost out to Scottish Premier League Aberdeen for the youngster’s signature.

However, having spoken to other potential candidates, it looks like any further additions are unlikely to enter the Stadium of Light before the club’s club tie this Thursday.

Ross told the Northern Echo: “We’re still trying to do something. It’s difficult to say with certainty whether we’ll manage to have anyone else involved in the squad by Thursday.

“We’re very light in the forward areas at the moment, but there has to be a balance with how anyone we will bring in will blend with the players coming back.

“We don’t want to end up with the squad being too heavy. If we do recruit, it will have to be the right player to balance with what we’ve got.”

The Verdict

The goalscoring burden can’t continue to be placed on young Josh Maja’s shoulders despite making it two goals in two games in the draw with Luton Town this past weekend.

Even when Jerome Sinclair and Charlie Wyke are back in contention, it would be handy to have a fourth option in attack.

Regardless whether it is before the cup tie or after, the importance is the league, so there is time on Jack Ross’ side to get any potential deals over the line in time for Sunday’s home clash with Scunthorpe United.

Although unlikely by Thursday, you’d imagine a new signing will be lined up and announced either towards the end of the week or the start of next week.
