Sunderland are just one win away from securing promotion back to the Championship at the first attempt, as they prepare to face Charlton in the League One play-off final.

The Black Cats missed out on automatic promotion following a disappointing end to the regular season, but they overcame Portsmouth in the play-off semi-finals to book their place at Wembley.

Jack Ross could not call upon talisman Aiden McGeady in either of the clashes against Pompey, with the winger injuring himself in the warm-up before the first leg.

McGeady has struggled with injury since damaging his foot against Accrington Stanley in April, but his importance to the Sunderland meant he attempted to play through the pain.

The 33-year-old has now had two weeks of solid rest as he watched his teammates overcome Pompey, and Ross has now declared he could be fit to feature in the Wembley showpiece.

"Aiden McGeady has a chance of being involved," Ross told the club's Twitter account.

"The two-week break he’s had has helped him. We’ve built up his workload during this week and that will give him every chance of being involved."

McGeady has been vital to Sunderland this season, with his 11 goals in 34 appearances earning him a spot in the PFA League One Team of the Year.

The Verdict

It cannot be underestimated how much of a boost this would be for Sunderland.

McGeady has been central to Sunderland's playing strategy this season, and he would add some much-needed firepower to the Black Cats' attacking unit at Wembley.

Ross' side demonstrated their resilience by keeping back-to-back clean sheets against Portsmouth, so the addition of McGeady's trickery would provide Charlton with a very difficult test.
