Sunderland boss Jack Ross insists he is the right man to lead the club next season after they failed to win promotion in dramatic fashion this afternoon.

A 94th minute strike from Charlton centre-back Patrick Bauer condemned the Black Cats to a second successive season in League One, with the Addicks winning 2-1 at Wembley.

Whilst it's hard not to feel sympathy for all connected to the north-east given the manner of the defeat, the reality is that Ross has failed to deliver on the pre-season target of promotion.

That has prompted some fans to suggest the former St. Mirren man should go, however Ross told Chronicle Live that he wants to stay at the Stadium of Light and feels the past year has been a big learning curve.

"I’ve put an awful lot into the last 12 months - it has been pretty much relentless for me - and I will continue to do that for as long as I have the opportunity to do so.

"During the course of the season we understand which areas we need to do better in. We haven’t fallen short by much, but we have [fallen short].

"We know the areas, we have probably known them for a while, and it is just a case that you can’t do much over the last three or four months of the season once the transfer window closes."

The Verdict

That was an awful way for Sunderland to lose and Ross deserves credit for coming out and speaking in the way he did after what was such a low moment.

Clearly, he still believes he is the right man for the job and you can understand why as in terms of their points return, it was a decent season.

Unfortunately, it was all about promotion and that didn't happen, so Ross will know questions will be asked.
