Jack Ross gives Sunderland player update which is likely to relieve fans

Sunderland made light work of Southend United this weekend, running out comfortable 3-0 winners at the Stadium of Light.

Chris Maguire grabbed the headlines with a stunning drive, but a comprehensive team effort from the Black Cats moved them to within touching distance of the league leaders.

Lynden Gooch turned in another eye-catching display too, but worryingly left the field on 74 minutes with an injury. He went straight down the tunnel for assessment as former Wycombe man Luke O’Nien took his place.

The severity of that injury has been revealed, with the Sunderland boss hopeful the 22-year old USA international will be back in action soon.

Jack Ross told the Shields Gazette: “It was a little bit of tightness in the same hamstring. It was just precautionary from his point of view. I was about to make a sub anyway and he was one I was considering bringing off and that made up my mind.”

“He’ll be okay.”

Gooch has been with the Black Cats since he was 15 and has spent time on loan with Gateshead and Doncaster.

He’s emerged as one of the brightest talents at the Stadium of Light this season, with three goals from 13 league appearances.

The Verdict

Sunderland will be delighted to learn his injury isn’t severe as he’s a key part of their attacking force. He sits behind the front man, pulling strings and creating chances.

He’s thrived in League One this season, something that is only going to continue as he settles into a first team role. It bodes well for Ross.
