Jack Ross has revealed that he is likely to make a new addition in the January transfer window, but that it is hard to say exactly where right now as his side could still evolve between now and then.

The Black Cats are currently fifth in the division, just behind the leaders but with a game in hand courtesy of their recent international break. They've suffered through injury, Charlie Wyke has barely kicked a ball for them and Duncan Watmore is on the recovery trail too.

Ross told local press that if he needs to strengthen, there's little doubt he'll be able to do so, within reason.

“I know that if we want to strengthen we’ll be able to do so, within reason obviously," he told the Shields Gazette. "I don’t see us being hamstrung. We need to make sure we don’t become too heavy in [terms of] numbers but I think we’ve done that OK."

However, it is currently hard for the former St Mirren boss to predict exactly what they'll need as he is unsure of the status of his returning players and of course, the variables between now and the window.

"If you look at our squad, it’s probably just about right in terms of numbers. One or two might be helpful. Then again, you can’t predict what will happen between now and January, but to counter that, Charlie Wyke will be coming back around that time, Duncan Watmore will be available before then. It will be dependent on what happens between now and then."

The Black Cats have two away games this week, starting at Shrewsbury tomorrow before travelling to Doncaster on Tuesday night.

The Verdict

Sunderland are good in terms of numbers and are performing well, but a new face or two might not hurt in the window, just as a show of strength.

With Glenn Loovens struggling to play every game, they might want to look at a new centre back. They're okay up front, but only if they hold on to Josh Maja.
