Sunderland boss Jack Ross gas revealed that the Black Cats are still in the hunt for Bradford City striker Charlie Wyke, despite the saga dragging on longer than hoped.

Ross is looking for extra options up front after capturing Jerome Sinclair from Watford on a season-long loan, and he's still interested in the former Carlisle striker.

“That’s one we are continuing to pursue," he told the Sunderland Echo in response to a question about Wyke. "We want to get him, I think that’s well-documented, and the club has been very patient in its pursuit although that will have to come to an end one way or another soon – hopefully in our favour.”

Wyke has been valued at £1m, but Sunderland's chances were boosted recently with news that Bradford City were looking to sign Preston striker Eoin Doyle to replace Wyke.

Wyke began his career in the north east with Middlesbrough, enjoying loan spells in the area with Hartlepool before moving to Carlisle United permanently in 2015.

39 goals in 89 games prompted Bradford to secure his services in January 2017, where he has since scored 19 times in 42 matches.

The Verdict

Wyke would be a great capture for Ross, but the new Sunderland boss must not be caught with his pants down.

If the deal doesn't go through then his side look very light up front, something they paid the price for last season.

Ross is hopeful of bringing in Wyke and maybe another striker, but Black Cats' fans will be happier when they see it, not just hear about it.
