Jack Ross gives his verdict on Alex Neil following Sunderland’s promotion

Alex Neil has done a brilliant job this season since coming into Sunderland

Arriving in February, the Scotsman has taken his side through two legs of a play-off semi-final before reaching Wembley to face Wycombe Wanderers.

The Black Cats came out victorious in the final beating the Chairboys 2-0 meaning they are back in the Championship ending their four year stay in League One.

As a result of their success, Alex Neil has received plenty of well deserved praise and the latest person to offer it is former Sunderland and Hibernian boss Jack Ross as he told the Sunderland Echo: “Listen, it is a hugely challenging club to manage.

“In the best possible way I mean but it comes with a lot of expectation and you carry that responsibility or what it means to the people and the area.

“He has handled that very well. I was at a game very early in his tenure. I think it was MK Dons. He had just taken over at the point. I’m not sure people believed he would take them up.

“In fairness, he has had a terrific run and he had the terrific form which is important for the play-offs and obviously he has achieved that goal and I’m delighted for him.”

The Verdict:

Alex Neil deserves all the praise he gets after this season as he’s done a brilliant job with the team and led them to promotion.

When Sunderland first went down to League One, not many would’ve expected a prolonged stay in the league and considering how many managers have tried to get them promoted in that time is credit to the job he’s done this season.

At a club like Sunderland there will always be pressure on the manger to do well but he’s seemed to deal with the pressure well and embrace it.

Now, he will be looking towards the new season and where he can make additions to keep his side in the Championship.
