Jack Ross is undeterred in his pursuit of prime target Charlie Wyke, despite the player's injury ruling him out until after the start of the season.

Wyke picked up an injury just eight minutes into Bradford' pre-season friendly with Sheffield Wednesday which has since ruled him out of their preparations.

That hasn't put off Ross, according to reports in the Sunderland Echo.

The 25-year-old is also a target for Championship side Bolton Wanderers, with the two clubs set to duel for his signature.

Sunderland have already lost out on Lyle Taylor and Mo Eisa this summer, but with Wyke heralding from the north east, they'll be hoping they can pip their rivals to his signature.

Wyke has been with Bradford eighteen months, last season he hit 15 League One goals in 40 outings for the club.

He began his career as a trainee with Middlesbrough, but after a successful loan spell with Hartlepool he joined Carlisle, where he smashed 39 goals in 89 matches in all competitions.

The Verdict

There's often a stigma around signing a player with an injury, but I can't see any reason why Sunderland wouldn't press ahead with this move, if  it isn't too serious.

They do need to bring a centre forward in quickly though, currently Josh Maja and Andrew Nelson currently the only available options for Ross.
