Sunderland boss Jack Ross has been talking about his plans in the January transfer window, revealing he is not looking to make any significant changes to his current crop of players.

Talking to the Northern Echo, he said that if the current squad were to remain intact, he might look at bringing one more in. However, there's plenty of other factors to consider before the window opens.

Sunderland could find themselves raided for some of their big performers, the likes of Josh Maja for instance have been earning rave reviews.

High-earners like Brian Oviedo and Aiden McGeady would surely be moved on under the right circumstances too, but if those players all stay at the club, Ross won't be making any outlandish purchases.

“If the squad was to remain as it is through January, then we would look to do very little,” said the Black Cats boss. “Maybe we’d look to bring in one player in a defensive area, just to give us a little bit more depth."

“We’ve seen with Adam’s (Matthews) injury, that we’re a little bit light in that area. But the squad has done well to date, and that’s been with a fair few injuries along the way."

He's also likely to be buoyed by the return of key players over the coming weeks, with Duncan Watmore back on the pitch after a long spell out and Charlie Wyke expected to be involved as the festive period gets underway.

The Verdict

There's no need for Sunderland to spend big and it wouldn't fit with Ross' ethos either.

He's cleared the big earners and those with high expectations. Instead, they're now a committed bunch of honest, hard working lads.

He wouldn't upset that spirit by bringing in lots of new faces. It would be counter productive.
