Sunderland will remain without three senior players for Saturday's game against Portsmouth, although they could welcome back Dylan McGeouch and Denver Hume.

The pair missed the the 3-1 win against Accrington Stanley in the League Cup on Tuesday, along with Duncan Watmore, Ethan Robson and Glenn Loovens.

And, Ross gave an update on the situation on the five players when speaking to the media ahead of Pompey's visit.

"Watmore, Robson and Loovens are still out. Hume and McGeouch joined back in training today so we will see how they react but they should be ok."

With the Black Cats struggling for natural options at left-back following Bryan Oviedo's departure to Copenhagen, Hume could win his place back for the fixture at the Stadium of Light, but McGeouch may struggle after those coming in impressed in the cup success.

The Wearside outfit will now be hoping to secure maximum points for the first time this season after they struggled to two 1-1 draws in the opening weeks and they now occupy a mid-table position in League One.

The Verdict

Obviously it's not an ideal situation for Ross to be in as he would have hoped to have a full squad to choose from at this stage of the season.

However, the north-east side do have decent depth, so they can cope without the three injured players relatively easily.

The challenge for those selected is to help the side to a first victory, ensuring they keep their place moving forward.

After a tough start, it's vital they get a first win, although Kenny Jackett's side are going to be tough opposition.
