Sunderland boss Jack Ross wants more from his players despite a reasonably strong start to the season for his new-look squad.

The former St. Mirren boss was appointed as the Black Cats manager in the summer, in what was a period of major change for the club following successive relegations.

Despite the new owners and high turnover of players, Ross made it perfectly clear that promotion, and winning the league, is the aim.

"I want to be successful, and I don't just mean bringing stability back to this club, I mean being top of the league and being promoted," he told Chronicle Live.

"I probably build the expectation up myself, in terms of setting targets and ambitions for myself."

He then outlined what his long-term plans were for the north east club.

"Ultimately, I think I will only consider my time here as a success if I can get this club back to the level that people believe it should be at."

Sunderland head to Shrewsbury this afternoon in League One, where they currently sit fifth in the league.

Although, they are only four points away from the automatic promotion places, whilst they have a game in hand on several rivals.

The Verdict

This is a great message from Ross and exactly what the fans will want to hear.

It's alright to play down expectations at certain clubs, but not when you're in charge of Sunderland in League One.

The size of the club, the support and the resources mean they shouldn't be in the third tier and Ross is right to demand a lot from his players.
