Sunderland defender Ethan Robson has taken another step on the road to recovery, according to the Chronicle Live.

The 22-year old has endured a tough season so far, finding himself on the side-lines in the early stages of the campaign after picking up a knock pre-season.

He returned for the EFL Trophy tie with Stoke City Under 21s, but frustratingly picked up another injury against Carlisle in the same competition, with those two starts being the sum total of his senior football this season.

Having made six starts in the Championship last season, he was one of the young players expected to thrive in the lower level, but as yet he hasn't been able to shake his injury troubles.

Jack Ross has now confirmed that he's started running again, although any return to full training will probably be delayed until the start of 2019.

"Ethan has started running again, which is a step forward after what was quite a nasty injury he had," said the former St Mirren boss.

"He's back running on the grass, he is doing some strength and conditioning work, but he is probably two or three weeks away from being back in full training."

Sunderland have suffered with injuries all season, with Duncan Watmore, Charlie Wyke, Dylan McGeouch, Lee Cattermole, Donald Love, Aiden McGeady, Jerome Sinclair and the youngster Robson all spending time on the treatment table.
The Verdict
Injuries are part and parcel of the game, but the Black Cats have been incredibly unlucky with the high number they've endured, as well as the severity of some. Whereas teams get players injured for a couple of games, Sunderland have had them out for a couple of months.
There's a big boost to be had as they all come back though, especially as they've maintained a promotion challenge without some very talented players.
