Sunderland manager Jack Ross has backed his £4m signing Will Grigg to start hitting the goal trail sooner rather than later following his blank against Accrington last night.

The Black Cats came from two down to snatch a point at the Stadium of Light, but it could have been more had Grigg took a couple of golden opportunities to hit the back of the net.

The former Wigan man has yet to hit the net in three games for Jack Ross' men, but the Black Cats manager is not concerned, and backed Grigg to start firing soon.

"It would be a greater concern if he had had no opportunities, in terms of a team in what we were creating and that he wasn’t in those positions", Ross told the Sunderland Echo.

“The last couple of game I'm sure he would have felt he could have come out with two or three goals. But like I said, his record and his pedigree and what I have seen of him, the chances keep coming then the goals will come.”

Sunderland missed the chance with the draw to close the gap on Barnsley in second, and now they are out of games in hand to make up the three point gap to the Reds in the race for League One promotion.

Grigg, who was a big money signing in a deal that went down to the wire on deadline day, will be hoping to start hitting the goal trail soon and proving himself to his new employers.

The Verdict

Grigg was a risk at £4m in all honesty, and the pressure on his shoulders might just be showing a bit.

However, at League One level, he can do it and do it well, and I'm sure once one goes in, the goals will flow.

Jack Ross is right to not be worried yet, but there will be something in his mind that is desperate to see Grigg start scoring.
