Sunderland boss Jack Ross has given his thoughts on the promotion race as we head into the final weeks of the League One season.

Luton Town look set to win the title but the battle for second remains intense, with the Black Cats, Barnsley and Portsmouth all still in the running.

“I've enjoyed the games against teams at the top of the table,” Ross told his pre-match press conference ahead of this week’s clash with Burton Albion, report the Sunderland Echo.

“I think atmosphere-wise it will be terrific.

“On paper perhaps we have the most challenging run-in but they're relishing the challenge they have.”

The North East club drew level with Barnsley on the weekend thanks to a dramatic 2-1 win away to Rochdale.

Ian Henderson put the lowly Dale into the lead but second half goals from Charlie Wyke and George Honeyman, coupled with a defeat for the Tykes, drew them level with the automatic promotion places.

A win on Tuesday will see them jump above Daniel Stendel’s side with the match against the Brewers one of two games in hand.

The verdict

This looks like it will go right to the final day.

Portsmouth looked out of it a few weeks ago but a great run of form has seen them dragged right back into the mix.

A win for Sunderland on Tuesday would be massive.
