Wayne Rooney is set to talk with Jack Marriott regarding the striker's future at Derby County, as he edges closer to making a full return from injury.

Marriott joined Sheffield Wednesday on a season-long loan deal in October, after falling out of favour under Phillip Cocu at Pride Park.

The 26-year-old made seven appearances for Wednesday before picking up an injury, culminating in a return to Derby for the striker.

Marriott has subsequently spent the last month on the sidelines, building up his fitness at Derby ahead of the remainder of the season.

Speaking in this afternoon's press conference ahead of Wednesday's trip to Brentford, Rooney has revealed that he is set to have talks with Marriott regarding the rest of the season, as per Derbyshire Live.

Marriott has also had a scan on his ankle and is only a couple of weeks away from making a recovery. After that, they will discuss whether he spends the rest of the season at Sheffield Wednesday or at Derby.

The Verdict

It would be a dramatic change of events for Marriott if he was to remain at Derby and spent the rest of the season with the Rams.

Derby are short of attacking options at the moment, and you'd back them to bring in another striker to provide competition for Colin Kazim-Richards in January.

Marriott, though, could solve them a lot of problems, and if he gets back to his best, there is no reason to suggest why he can't be a success under Rooney.
