Jack Marriott issues comments that will please Derby County supporters

Derby County have announced the highly-anticipated signing of Peterborough striker Jack Marriott for an undisclosed fee.

In a statement on the Derby County website, the 23-year-old expressed his admiration for the Rams and said the decision to move to Pride Park was an easy on.

Marriott stated: “The size of the club, it is a real footballing city.

“You look at the gaffer, he is a real footballing guy, you just know about him and what he has done in the game. As soon as I heard that he wanted me then it was a no brainer for me, this is where I wanted to be.

“You look at the facilities it is just staggering. You look at the fanbase and why wouldn’t you want to come here?”

Marriott found the net 27 times last season in a League One campaign that saw his former side finish in ninth place, with the striker picking up the divisions golden boot award and  spot in the PFA League One Team of the Year along the way.

The young forward has enjoyed loan spells at a number of clubs, and credits his successes to date for them, stating: “I think that it got to a stage in my career that I had learned so much from having my loan spells and then having a permanent place in the first-team squad at Luton.

“Then I went to Peterborough and felt, not established, but that I could get to my best and I got close.”

Marriott will be playing under former Chelsea legend and new Rams manager Frank Lampard this season, as they hope to improve on their disappointing play-off exit from last campaign.

Marriott continued: “With a new manager coming in and how close you have been over previous years to promotion, that’s something that you want to take in to consideration.

“I’m just excited, I can’t wait to get going. I can’t wait to be working with the manager and all the lads here, there is a great group of talented players and I think we have certainly got a chance.”

The Verdict

Jack Marriott is an inspired signing for Derby County. Having bagged himself 27 goals in a league campaign, it is surprising a bottom half Premier League team didn’t come in for the Englishman this summer.

While Frank Lampard might not have the highest, or if any, managing pedigree, this signing shows that he is going to be a force to be reckoned with this season.

Marriott will terrorise defensive lines this season, and expect to see another high goal tally from the forward.
