In the two years before the arrival of Jaap Stam, Reading recorded disappointing 19th and 17th place finishes, and the Royals looked more than likely to drop into League One than turning things around to launch a promotion bid.

Fast forward to the May 2017, and Reading were just a game away from the Premier League having finished 3rd in the division and dispatched Fulham in the play-off semi finals.

Some might call it a miracle, but Reading fans will call it Jaap Stam.

The former Manchester United defender was afforded his first opportunity in management by Reading co-chairman John Madejski, and the Dutchman rewarded his faith with an astonishing turnaround.

Stam made several solid signings, including the acquisition of former Chelsea midfielder John Swift, and the Royals evolved from relegation candidates to Premier League hopefuls.

Admiring eyes were on Stam, and Premier League moves were discussed, but Reading have tied their influential gaffer to a new two year deal, and the Madejski will breath a huge sigh of relief.

Stam has a busy summer ahead of him if he is to emulate the success of last season, and with other clubs in the division strengthening, the new season will bring a fresh set of challenges to Stam’s men.

There are still many weeks remaining in the 2017 summer transfer window, and Stam will work hard to prepare his squad for the new campaign which kicks off in around a month’s time.

It won’t be easy for Reading next season, but with Stam having signed a new deal, the Royals have been given the best possible opportunity to succeed.
