Considering they got to the play-off final last season, you’d be forgiven that Reading would be doing slightly better than four points after three games.

Obviously, it is a bit early on in the season to be suggesting that there are any real issues at Reading.

Jaap Stam has had a busy transfer window so far this summer, bringing in five fresh faces into the Royals squad.

One of those new faces is Icelandic striker Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, who signed from Wolves last month.

Whilst the 25-year-old certainly bolsters Stam’s attacking options, there have been a few rumours circulating the web linking a club legend with a move back to the Madejski.

Getreading took a survey at the end of last season asking Reading fans who they want their club to sign once the transfer window opens.

The most popular player put forward by fans?

Shane Long.

During his time as a Royal from 2005 to 2011, Long appeared 174 times and scored 44 goals.

In the process, he became a favourite amongst the fans and that survey proved they would love to have their former star striker back.

The Irishman had a slow season during the 2016/17 campaign, scoring just three league goals in 32 appearances.

At 30-years-old, perhaps a move down a league into the Championship would benefit the player and help him recapture his best form.

Don’t get too hopeful Reading fans as Jaap Stam addressed the rumours regarding Long re-joining the club saying the speculation was “new to him”.

Royals fans will be hoping he is just being coy on his transfer policy.
