Reading FC have struggled in the league this season, with Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at home to Brentford leaving Jaap Stam’s side just four points clear of the bottom three, with just eighteen games of the season remaining.
A disappointing result against a Brentford side that edged proceedings at the Madejski Stadium, Stam will hope to cast his league woes aside this weekend when the Royals travel to Sheffield Wednesday in the fourth round of the FA Cup this weekend.
The Berkshire side are in desperate need of a timely boost to aid their cause in what is becoming a fight for survival, with the Cup providing a timely distraction from league action, something Stam is well aware of.
“We’ve got a couple of days to recover from Brentford – that’s what we need to do,” he told the club’s official website.
“We need to go over to Hillsborough and get a result and hopefully do well in the FA Cup.
“It’s always nice to do well in the FA Cup.”
Reading are in need of a boost, and victory at fellow strugglers Sheffield Wednesday could provide Stam’s men with the perfect injection of confidence before they return to league action next week.
Stam has a good enough squad at The Madejski to remain well clear of the bottom three, but with the relegation spots just four points behind them, many in Berkshire will be starting to sweat. Victory in the Cup could spark a revival, such is its magic.
