Sheffield Wednesday have been handed a major boost in their quest for Championship survival, with their 12-point deduction halved last night.

Garry Monk's side had been handed the uphill task of overhauling a serious off-season deduction, which had left them cut adrift at the bottom of the Championship table.

However, last night it was revealed that Wednesday's deduction had been halved to just six points, catapulting them into a position where they have a realistic chance of surviving relegation.

As the news filtered through to Monk's playing squad, there was a reaction from Izzy Brown on Twitter, with the on loan midfielder clearly delighted with the ruling:

With six points back on the board, Wednesday have moved onto five points, with Tuesday's win over AFC Bournemouth now looking invaluable.

Monk's side remain bottom of the pile in terms of the Championship table, but they are now only three points adrift of safety and could move out of the relegation zone this weekend if they beat Millwall and results elsewhere go their way.

So far, Monk has picked up three wins and two draws in the opening 10 fixtures of the Championship season, with 11 points collected from a possible 30.

The Verdict

Like the Wednesday fans, Monk's squad are sure to be delighted with last night's outcome.

They have done well to pick up three early season wins with their backs against the wall, with those points now looking so, so valuable in terms of the league standings.

It's been a tough period for the Owls, but there's no big ambitions for either side of the international break. The squad should have a spring in their step and be really focused on pulling clear of safety ahead of the festive period.
