Championship outfit Ipswich Town lost 6-1 to League 1 Charlton Athletic on Saturday afternoon, putting in a performance that manager Mick McCarthy described as 'embarrassing'

A virus has laid low some of McCarthy's squad this week but the former Republic of Ireland international refused to make any excuses for the performance, saying he'd have booed the team, just as the travelling Tractor Boys fans did, if he'd have been in the stands.

Following a dismal season, McCarthy's relationship with the club's fans was already strained and the former Wolves manager acknowledged that he needs the players to offer up a response when they open their Championship season by hosting Birmingham City next weekend - and he fully expects them to do so.

However, the Ipswich Town fans reacted on Twitter by calling for McCarthy to leave the Portman Road hotseat and there were precious few signs of the optimism that usually accompanies the start of a new season.

The issues from last season are still prevalent and McCarthy still has some serious work to do if he is to transform the views of the fanbase.
