Birmingham City have made some very notable transfers over the years, with Alen Halilovic's arrival the latest eye-catching move.

Another deal that attracted attention involved a fellow Croatian, as Blues splashed out around £6.3m to bring Ivan Sunjic to St. Andrew's in the summer of 2019.

A defensive midfielder, Sunjic came through at Dinamo Zagreb, whilst he starred for the Croats U21 side before making the switch to England.

And, having spent over a season with Blues, we assess how it's worked out...

How's it gone so far?

It's been a mixed bag in truth.

Firstly, he was joining a side that weren't blessed with huge quality, whilst Sunjic had some pressure on his shoulders given his price tag.

Whether he's justified that is open to debate, although you can understand why some will have expected more from a £6m+ player.

However, there's no denying that he gives his all and he did need time to adapt to a new country, league and lifestyle.

Birmingham City quiz: Can you name the club’s top goalscorer from the last 13 seasons?

What issues does he face?

The main issue is that he is adapting to another manager, with current boss Aitor Karanka bringing a new style of play.

That's a problem for all the Blues players, and it certainly can't have helped. It's clear that Karanka rates the 24-year-old though, as he plays most week, so there are no worries on that front.

What's next?

Sunjic just needs to keep improving.

He may have had ambitions to play in the Premier League but he hasn't shown enough to earn a transfer away, so he will be concentrating on trying to get Blues promoted.

Having only just turned 24, the midfielder is only going to get better, and with three years left on his deal, nothing will be in the pipeline right now.
