24 hours has to be considered a long-time in football and so it has proved again, with reports signalling that Charlton Athletic had failed in agreeing a contract extension with manager Lee Bowyer, being swiftly superseded by confirmation on the club website that a new deal for 42-year-old Bowyer had been agreed.

Bowyer has agreed a one year contract extension that means he will lead the Addicks on their return to the Championship next season, having gained promotion via a dramatic play-off final victory over Sunderland in May.

So have Charlton averted a disaster by getting Bowyer to sign a new deal?

We discuss........

Toby Wilding

"To a large extent yes.

"The main thing is that Charlton have got their man to lead them into the Championship next season, although there has to be some questions raised about the communication in the club for two such contrasting statements to be put out so close to one another.

"Charlton fans may be conscious about going through this again in 12 months time given this is only a one year deal, but they will be hoping that by that point the back drop around the club will be rather different."

Kealan Hughes

"This was very strange from Charlton, since there has been a complete turnaround from yesterday when it appeared Bowyer was on his way out of the club.

"It is very good news for Charlton and the fans, and Bowyer will likely be even more appreciated next season as the fans know he was on the verge of leaving.

"Now Bowyer's future seems to be settled the club is in a much more stable position and they could use this platform to build for the long-term and look towards consolidating themselves as a strong Championship club."

Gary Hutchinson

“Yes, without a doubt.

“It’s utterly ridiculous that the situation came to this. The statement they put out was childish at best.

“Bowyer is hot property, he has to be. He got a side promoted on a shoestring, finishing above a team with £5m worth of strikers.

“He built a spirit and purpose that excelled and impressed. How dare they try to wriggle out of paying him what he’s worth.”

Louie Chandler

"This is absolutely massive.

"I don't think you can overstate just how important a figure Bowyer is at Charlton. The fans love him, the players love him and at a club with such terrible off-field issues, that is massive.

"Had he gone, I would have fancied Charlton to get relegated. I feel like the board have stumbled across a gem in Bowyer and do not think they would have been able to replace him."
