Sheffield Wednesday exited the Carabao Cup on Tuesday evening, as they were beaten by two goals to nil against Everton at Hillsborough.

Garry Monk made a number of changes to his squad, as he looks to keep his starting XI fresh ahead of their league game against Middlesbrough.

Football League World's Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit Thomas Fogg wasn't surprised to see the Owls boss make changes, but felt his side could have taken the game to Everton on the night.

"As Monk has not been in the job long, I was not surprised there were lots of changes as he will want to see everyone in a match environment as soon as possible.

"I imagine the Fulham game took a lot out of certain players too so I was not surprised to see the likes of Bannan, Hutchinson & Borner given the night off. That said, Everton have been poor recently and a stronger side may have been able to capitalise on this more as they had a terrible shape defensively."

One player that struggled to make a notable impact during the game was Sam Winnall, who spurned a golden opportunity to pull a goal back for the home side.

The forward received criticism from some of the club's supporters after his performance, and it remains to be seen as to whether he'll keep his place in the starting XI for their game against Boro this weekend.

The Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit felt that it's unfair to criticise the former Barnsley man, who has only recently made his return to the first-team squad after a lengthy injury lay-off.

"Sam Winnall had a tough night but given his injury problems, it’s unfair to be too critical until he’s got around ten games under his belt.

"I thought Luongo played well and I would like to see him paired with Sam Hutchinson as a midfield two in a 4-2-3-1 which would give a solid defensive base and give the likes of Bannan/Lee more freedom going forward."
