Sunderland are interested in signing Leyton Orient's Josh Koroma, according to The Sun.

The 20-year-old enjoyed a brilliant campaign last season, guiding Orient to the National League title as he scored 11 goals and made seven assists.

He has really flourished since transitioning from a winger into a number 9, and he tormented defenders throughout the season. He is clearly too good for non-league, and would likely be as impressive in League Two, but is he ready for League One?

Sunderland have been in need of a talismanic figure up front since Josh Maja departed, and given a chance in the team Koroma could be that player.

Sunderland face competition from Huddersfield and Middlesbrough, and it is believed The O's have set an asking price of £500,000, having already rejected a bid of £300,000.

There is no doubt that Koroma is a player with a lot of talent, but he can often let himself down by trying to do too much - attempting to beat one player too many or shooting from long distance.

Sunderland opted to sign Will Grigg after missing out on Koroma in January, and his transfer hasn't exactly lit up the Stadium of Light, so there could be space for Koroma.

Our writers share their views on whether he would get into the Sunderland starting XI.

Jacob Potter

"He'd have to work his way into the starting XI, but would be a regular starter eventually.

"Sunderland struggled in front of goal last season, which ultimately cost them promotion back into the Championship.

"Koroma is a player with real potential and could thrive in Jack Ross' side next season, and he'd be a regular in their side if he can prove himself to be a good enough player at League One level."

Gary Hutchinson

“No, I can’t see him playing there now.

“He might get a run out from the bench, but he surely wouldn’t be a starter.

“He can play on the flank though so perhaps they like him as an energetic man in the bank of three behind the main striker.

“I just think it’s too early for him. He needs regular football.”

Toby Wilding

"I don't think he would to start with.

"Given the money and expectation they have put into Will Grigg since his arrival in January, you imagine that the Northern Irishman will start the season leading the line for the Black Cats in order to pay back that investment.

"If however he fails to improve on his return from last season - or his injury problems return - there may well be an opportunity for Koroma to step up to the plate at some point this season."
