Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa is getting his preparations for next season on the go bright and early, with his players reporting back for pre-season next Monday, to give the Argentine time to assemble a squad capable of automatic promotion next season.

Amongst the decisions that Bielsa faces, the future of defender Connor Shaughnessy will be up for consideration, following a useful loan spell at Hearts over the second half of last season, having had a troubled time at Elland Road since signing for the club in 2016.

So should Bielsa be looking to keep, loan out or sell Shaughnessy this summer?

We discuss........

Tommy Joyce

"With Leeds wanting Ben White in to strengthen their back-line, the end should be nigh for Shaughnessy.

"He enjoyed a good spell at Hearts last year and you'd think he'd want more of that kind of action. The fact that Leeds are wanting to loan in rotation centre-backs shows you that he's not part of Bielsa's plans.

"At 22, it's best for all parties if they depart with him. A loan might work, but if he's getting loaned out now - barring a wonder season - it's hard to predict him ever making that Leeds team.

"A move back to Hearts could suit the centre-back."

George Harbey

"I think he should be sold by Bielsa’s side, and follow in the footsteps of Paudie O’Connor.

"He may have some decent potential, but let’s face it, he isn’t going to get into the Leeds starting line-up any time soon, nor is he ready to challenge either.

"Pontus Jansson and Liam Cooper have set the standard, and if the club sign Ben White on loan from Brighton, then that seals Shaughnessy’s fate.

"He needs to be brave and move on for good this summer."

Ben Lang

"It's time to sell up, as he didn't really impress at Hearts on loan.

"He's never really made the grade at Elland Road and struggled to get in the first team during the first half of the season, so I can't see that changing next term with Bielsa still at the helm.

"Leeds should be looking to cash in their dead wood wherever possible this summer in order to create funds, and Shaughnessy should come under that bracket.

"It remains to be seen where Shaughnessy would head, but I think he could prove to be a decent signing for a League One side."

Chris Gallagher

"They may as well move him on permanently.

"Whilst some players can develop later into their career, at 22 the Irishman should be closer to the first-team than he is right now if he wanted a future at Leeds.

"It's clear that Marcelo Bielsa isn't a huge fan as he sanctioned loan moves last season despite a lack of depth in defence.

"So, I can't see a future for him at Elland Road and a permanent departure would suit all parties."
