Injuries plagued Sheffield Wednesday’s 2017/18 campaign and left the Owls way short of where many expected them to be in the Sky Bet Championship.

With the likes of Gary Hooper, Fernando Forestieri, Tom Lees and Barry Bannan missing large parts of the season, Wednesday struggled to compete for a hat-trick of play-off appearances, finishing in 15th.

Another key man to miss the bulk of the season was Keiren Westwood, but unlike some of his teammates, the goalkeeper wasn’t missed.

Joe Wildsmith and Cameron Dawson covered fantastically from December onwards.

Here at FLW, we believe that the coming summer could be the perfect time for Wednesday to move £900k-rated Westwood on.

The Irish international has been magnificent during his time at Hillsborough, with the goalkeeper’s role in helping Wednesday to play-off appearances in 2016 and 2017, an absolutely vital one.

Of course, at just 33, Westwood is still a young goalkeeper, but Wednesday can’t afford to hold Wildsmith and Dawson, both 22, back any longer.

The first-team at Hillsborough has looked down to the bare bones for most of the season, but the impact of the goalkeeping duo has been magnificent when Jos Luhukay has called on them.

Wednesday haven’t looked weaker without Westwood and Luhukay must surely be considering not installing the 33-year-old as No.1 again ahead of next season.

It might be seen as a big call to offload the goalkeeper, as a Championship rival could swoop, however, it’s certainly time for Wednesday to look to the future and be bold.

The 2017/18 campaign has been one that Wednesday’s supporters will want to forget, but the unfortunate injury to Westwood has opened the door for two emerging talents, who should now be given the opportunity to kick-on next season.
