It's not been a good season for Everton whose expectations last summer look very fantastical right now.

Of course, the Toffees had every right to feel as though they were going to be the main challengers to the 'big 6.' They had spent big and brought in decent players by the look of things but, ultimately, they did not address areas that have proven weak since.

At left-back, then, with the ageing Leighton Baines, is somewhere that they need to add in the summer; the stats in comparison to one of the best in the Championship - Joe Bryan - tell you all you need to know.

Of course, Bryan has played more football but that in part highlights the problem with Baines who - it must be said - has been an excellent servant.

Now, though, he's on the decline, troubled by injuries and in using stats that largely depend on not how many games you play, but on what you do in them, it's clear the former Wigan man is becoming less effective.

He's still a good player and certainly a more than capable back-up but the Blues need to start thinking about the future.

It's what Toffees dared to dream of last summer and, with a new ground on the way, it's a mindset they need to rekindle in the next market.

Joe Bryan won't be the sole answer to Everton's problems, of course, but he looks a decent place to start.
