New Middlesbrough manager Jonathan Woodgate will be looking to hit the ground running, as he looks to prepare a squad capable of a top-six finish in the Championship next season.

One player though who does not look to be in Woodgate's plans is 30-year-old striker Rudy Gestede, who has only scored four goals and made 39 appearances since arriving from Aston Villa back in 2017, according to a report on Gazette Live.

So are Boro right to let Gestede leave?

We discuss........

Kealan Hughes

"Moving to Middlesbrough hasn't worked out for Gestede, and despite him being a good player it is probably best for both parties that he leaves.

"He is likely getting paid a decent amount and Boro could receive a decent fee for him, which could be used to bring in a better, more productive striker.

"However, Middlesbrough are short on numbers up front, and other than Assombalonga, Gestede is probably the next best striker at the club, so Boro should only sell if they have a better replacement lined up."

Jacob Potter

"It’s the best move for both parties.

"Gestede isn’t going to be on relatively cheap wages at the Riverside, and they need to rebuild ahead of next season.

"Woodgate needs to move the ‘deadwood’ on at the earliest of opportunities, and Gestede comes into that category in my opinion.

"Boro have better options available to them, and I think they’re doing the right thing in looking to move him on as soon as possible."

George Brooks

"I can't say I'm surprised by this to be honest.

"Gestede failed to make an impact for Middlesbrough last season and made just eight appearances for the team in all competitions.

"I can't see him forcing his way into Jonathan Woodgate's plans ahead of next season, so it would make sense for him to leave the club.

"He's got just one year remaining on his contract at the Riverside, so this would be Middlesbrough's last chance to sell the player.

"I can understand why they were looking for a new striker and I think it makes sense to let Gestede go."

Gary Hutchinson

“Yeah, he’s not proven to be a good signing for them.

“He’s a Pulis player; robust, strong but perhaps lacking the finesse and poise needed for a footballing side.

“I can’t see him getting a side in the top six either, he just doesn’t have that bit of something special.

“He’d fit well in a team of grafters, a Millwall or someone hoping to stay up, like Barnsley.”
