Birmingham City are facing a mammoth 12-point deduction later this season, after the club breached rules on spending.

A report from the Telegraph this afternoon has revealed that the EFL are prepared to come down hard on the Blues, who are in deep trouble with the governing bodies.

After a difficult start to the season, just how much of a blow is this for Birmingham?

Our writers discuss…

George Dagless

It's potentially a huge blow.

The Blues have started sluggishly and this would leave them with a real fight on.

As it stands they're looking set for a mid-table at best finish and this setback would leave them having to aim for survival and little more.

Sam Rourke

This is extremely worrying.

This looks like it is a genuine threat, and if it did come to fruition, Garry Monk would have one hell of a task keeping the Blues in the Championship.

The owners need to take responsibility for this mishap, and this will ultimately further affect the connection between fans and the board.

Bad, bad news.

Alfie Burns

This would leave them in real trouble.

It’s not been the best start to the season, after a difficult summer, and this would probably leave the Blues facing a relegation battle.

Garry Monk has his work cut out anyway, so having 12 points snatched away from him could leave Birmingham facing League One.

Jay Taylor

It's potentially catastrophic.

Birmingham have not had the best of starts and this could derail their season.

It will be a relegation battle more than ever should the points be deducted.

Monk had a task on his hands before the news, and should the deduction come into effect, that task will become more difficult.
