One of the less expected transfers of the final day of the European summer transfer window on Monday, saw winger Arvin Appiah leave Nottingham Forest to join UD Almeria.

According to reports, the Spanish second-tier side have paid £8million for the 18-year-old, who has signed a five-year deal with his new club.

In total, Appiah had made just eight senior appearances for Forest, scoring on his debut in a 3-2 defeat to Burton Albion in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup last summer.

At the time of Appiah's departure, the 18-year-old still had four years remaining on his contract at The City Ground, having only signed a new deal with Forest earlier this year.

So will losing Appiah be a source of frustration for Forest?

We asked some of our Football League World writers for their thoughts on the issue.

Alfie Burns

“Yes and no, but I’d side with the latter on this occasion.

“On one hand, you’ve got a really talented young player who has moved on and Forest haven’t seen him fulfil his potential. That in itself is really frustrating for the fans, but they’ve got to look at the bigger picture.

“Appiah is miles off the first-team squad, which is still ludicrously big under Sabri Lamouchi.

“So, to pull in a decent fee that lessens the risk of FFP punishments mean the deal begins to make sense.

“You’re never going to please everyone, but Forest’s fans shouldn’t be too disappointed.”

Josh Cole

“This is unquestionably a blow for Forest as Appiah is clearly an extremely talented player.

“Following his emergence from the Reds’ youth academy last season, the winger made an immediate impression by producing a stand-out performance on his debut against Burton Albion.

“Having signed a new deal at the City Ground in January, it seemed as if Appiah would stay with Forest for the foreseeable future and eventually become a key player for the club.

“However, with Joe Lolley and Albert Adomah performing superbly this season, the 18-year-old’s lack of game-time last month would have played a key role in his decision to move to Segunda Division side Almeria.”

George Dagless

"It's mixed news in all honesty.

"Appiah is a good young player and could go on to have a bright career but if the Reds could not see him playing for them much in this campaign and the next few seasons then it makes sense for him to go.

"They've got a decent amount of money for him which should soften things but we'll only really know how much of a setback this is a few years down the line I'd have thought."
